I rank the social networks like this, in order of being the actual owner of the things you are publishing:
1) Fedi (self/community-hosted)
2) Nostr
3) Fedi (Someone else's server)
4) Bluesky
5) Telegram
6) All the horrible-corproate-fuckbollocks
I rank the private message apps like this, in order of how actually private they are:
1) Matrix
2) Signal
3) Whatsapp (though, yes, the content of the messages you send with your surveillance app are encrypted, but it is still a surveillance app, FFS)
4) Telegram - This is not even a private message app, this is a public not-encrypted message app. Why is it even on this list? It might as well say "email".
5) Email.
Which ones do you think my actual friends prefer?
This is the thing which infuriates me the most about helping people with their computers and their phones.
I really love helping people operate their equipment, but they always want me to help them operate it wrong.
Ugh.
I don't jump in their replies to say that though. At least i have that going for me.
While it sometimes makes me sad, the thing I love most about seeing instances fall apart is knowing that three new instances will rise up in their place.
For every domain the Taliban deletes, for every instance the corporations censor, for every domain that is just gets hounded out by the Home Owners Association that think they rule here, you'll see someone say, "FFS., I'll set up my own then, and this time we'll be gay and do crimes!"
Be gay. Do crimes. Bridge networks. Yell at people. Ignore the people yelling at you.
Be weird. Be fedi.
You think it's funny that these things are all reverse-ordered until you realize it's the actual bottom layer - email - which underlies all of your other things.
We use the least private of them for authentication, and the least sovereign for voice.
That is how fucked up this all is.
@pre Who are these home owner asses, and why are they allowed on Fedi?
@deadsuperhero I think the pixelfed guy is working on some kinda activitypub private messenger.
Perhaps one day we'll fix it all.
@pre email with pgp encryption?
@pre I like matrix but be warned that it doesnt encrypt any metadata in encrypted rooms, only messages and files uploaded are encrypted in encrypted rooms so room names, topics, reactions, everything else isnt
