When I imagined listening to Sam Harris interviewing Marc Andreessen about AI I feared that Sam would just swallow all Andreessen's bullshit but in fact he argued robustly and Andreessen sounds like he's a complete dumbass.
Somehow his mind just seems to slip over all the real arguments, mischaracterizing them while claiming to be "steel-manning" them, and then not even convincingly countering his mischaracterization. Dismisses much of it as being cult like or religious in nature.
He just seems to be in awe of a machine, and have no imagination to see it's harms.
He thinks a machine must be conscious or alive in order to have goals and motivations.
He thinks the thing must be safe because we designed it rather than it having been evolved, even while admitting we don't really know how it works because we grew it through training not design.
He goes on about how smart people can't in fact convince stupid people of things but how much has he spent on advertising in his life?
He is encouraged that the machine can converse on moral philosophy, without any consideration to the fact that in no way binds the machine or the fact you can also talk to it about strategies for winning genocidal wars.
He's fully generally just dismissed the doomers without thought or engaging with the argument because he's gotten the idea that it's like religion and he's not religious.
I used to be vaguely under the impression he was smart, but this shows like the opposite of that.
